The International Science Council (ISC) has appointed IIASA Director General, Albert van Jaarsveld, as a Foundation Fellow in recognition of his contribution to the role of ‘science as a global public good’.
Van Jaarsveld’s appointment was announced by the ISC alongside the creation of the Fellowship and the appointment of 65 other Foundation Fellows. The Fellowship is the highest honor that can be conferred on an individual by the ISC.
The first cohort of Fellows includes eminent scientists, engineers, and thought-leaders from the science-policy sphere who have made remarkable contributions to furthering understanding of and engagement with science.
65 Foundation Fellows
The Fellows come from across the world and from different disciplinary backgrounds and sectors of work. They include luminaries such as Salim Abdool Karim, Sumaya bint El Hassan, Johan Rockström, Jeffrey Sachs, and Flavia Schlegel.
“We want to clearly recognize those scientists who have contributed and continue to contribute to the global voice for science. Science needs champions, not just those who receive high-profile scientific prizes, but those who champion science in society and in policymaking, whether early or late in their career,” said ISC President, Peter Gluckman.
Supporting ISC’s mission
“I am honored to be recognized by the ISC in this way and I look forward to strengthening IIASA and ISC collaboration in the future,” says van Jaarsveld.
Through their scientific leadership and work to promote science in the public domain, the ISC Fellows will support the ISC’s mission to act as the global voice for science.
