Vietnamese Minister of Science and Technology, Hoang Thanh Tat, has emphasized the need for innovative thinking in science and technology management, while promoting the spirit of open science and innovation.
On July 8, 2022, the opening ceremony of the 2022 International Year of Basic Science for Sustainable Development, IYBSSD2022, was held at UNESCO headquarters.
Vietnamese Minister of Science and Technology Hoang Thanh Tat attended the opening ceremony and a high-level discussion on “The Role of Science in Policy Making”.
Minister Huang Chengda emphasized innovative thinking in science and technology management, encouraging experimentation, accepting risks and failures, and promoting the spirit of open science and open innovation.
Sharing patent information
Chengda also proposed the establishment of a platform for sharing patent information, data, scientific publications and research facilities to help less developed countries access and keep up with the world’s technological trends.
He stressed the issue of choosing priorities and ensuring a balance between economic growth and people’s security, which should place the people at the centre of all development policies.
Vietnam and IYBSSD2022
Vietnam is one of the first countries to initiate and promote the adoption of the “International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development” resolution at the 40th UNESCO General Conference (October 2019), as well as the United Nations General Assembly (December 2021) A/76/ Co-author of L Resolution.
Michel Spiro, President of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) and Chair of the IYBSSD 2022 Steering Committee, said in an interview with reporters that Vietnam’s move shows that Vietnam attaches great importance to basic science.
He called for the support of countries, policymakers and society as a whole to enable basic science to help achieve sustainable development goals.
