The ‘International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology’ is one of the global institutions that commemorated the World Science Day for Peace and Development as part of the ‘International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development’.
Writing from Brazil, Lawrence Banks joined ICGEB partners world-wide to celebrate World Science Day for Peace and Development as part of the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development.
This edition of the ICGEB news highlights the important role of science in society and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues.
Goals of Science
By linking science more closely with society, we share the aim to ensure that citizens are kept informed of developments in science, underscoring the role scientists play in broadening our understanding of the remarkable, fragile planet we call home and in making our societies more sustainable. ICGEB’s The Goals of Science – stories from our PIs – underline the importance and relevance of science in our daily lives. Videos can help to inspire others and also manifest our capacity as scientists to find solutions, using biotechnology in regions where it is needed, and matters most.
A major attribute of the success of our actions is networking, and this month ICGEB is in São Paolo, Brazil to visit the Instituto Butantan, the “Centro Nacional de Pesquisa em Energia e Mareriais” CNPEM, the University of São Paolo, and the Institute of Biomedical Sciences. All while attending the ICGEB Meeting in São Paolo on Emerging infectious diseases, which has also provides an opportunity to cement relations with Butantan, USP and FAPEST – sponsors of the event (photos below).
BIOTECHNET
Earlier last month, the ICGEB was in Serbia, where Dr. Banks met with local dignitaries and colleagues from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development and from the University of Belgrade.
We celebrate international science through the wonderful BIOTECHNET event held in Djibouti, the Meeting in Tunisia, in collaboration with ICGEB Affiliate, Centre of Biotechnology of Sfax, and the course being held in Member State Saudi Arabia, entitled “Hands-on structural bioinformatics for cancer drug development”, while we prepare for the events in 2023 to come.
