At the Sonia Fajardo Forero auditorium, in Colombia, Konrad Lorenz, joined the global community to officially launch the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD2022).
IYBSSD2022 was declared by UNESCO with the aim of highlighting the gift of basic sciences in societies, specifically in the issue of sustainability and compliance with development objectives, while contributing to human and planet well-being.
The launch was held on July 8, in the Sonia Fajardo Forero auditorium of our institution, with a significant attendance, in person and virtually, by students, teachers and researchers from the universities: Tolima, National of Colombia, Magdalena, of the Pedagogical and Technological Institute of Colombia, Pontificia Bolivariana, of America and the Colombian Association of Faculties of Sciences, ACOFACIEN.
One of the key moments during the event was the conference “Konrad Lorenz Actions Towards Sustainable Development and Social Transformation” by Ruth Alejandra Torres, Director of the Mathematics program, and Carlos del Valle, Director of the Industrial Engineering program, where they shared different projects that the Faculty of Mathematics and Engineering has developed, and others that it has planned within the framework of this International Year, calling for scientific cooperation for the sustainability of our country.
Karen Corredor, Psychology graduate of Konrad Lorenz; currently a postdoctoral intern at the Colombian Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences and a member of the Young Commission of this same organization, has this to say about IYBSSD2022: “It is the possibility for all people to be witnesses of the transforming capacity of science, for the improvement of living conditions and above all for the care of our planet as a common home”.
Activities such as projects, talks, workshops and conferences will continue throughout this year and will go until the third quarter of 2023.
