In this interview during the opening ceremony of IYBSSD, Ruhi Chitre, President, International Association of Physics Students (2021-2022), explains how science provides practical solutions to every global problem.
Science and World Problems
We need to take science seriously. We need to come up with evidence based solutions to all of these problems that we’re facing. We’re facing big problems with sustainability currently as everyone knows. We’re facing shortage of water. We’re facing climate crisis, many things like that.
What links do you make between the basic sciences and sustainable development?
For young people out there, we are really passionate about solving these issues and science is the way to solve these things. Science comes up with practical solutions on how for example get access to water, how to develop a world, how to come up with better systems, better uses of our resources which are currently not being used the way that they should be. So this is the link between science and sustainable development. Science is the solution to sustainable development.
What is your dearest wish for this coming year?
We hope to have a huge push to show how necessary science is ; to show that we need to take science seriously. We need to come up with evidence based solutions to all of these problems that we’re facing. And this is why we’re hère, and this is why us from the International Association of Physics, Students and students everywhere are so keen to make this link between science and sustainable development.
