The 2023 “Taipei Science Day” was held on 29th April 2023, attracting about 10,000 students and parents from Taipei City’s vocational schools, junior high schools, and Taiwan Normal University’s College of Science.
Distinguished guests who share the same philosophy of popularizing science participated in the grand event. The event attracted nearly 10,000 students and parents to play science and do experiments together, allowing science education to take root from an early age.
The “Taipei Science Day” is now in its ninth year. The good weather on the (29th) morning brought the National Taiwan Normal University College of Science to a full crowd of people.
Chen Yizhuang, the first female vice chairman of the National Science Council, Lin Yihua, the deputy mayor of Taipei City, Professor Qiu Meihong, the representative of the Taiwan executive team of the International Year of Basic Science for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD), Chen Qinghe, the president of Shih Hsin University, and other distinguished guests came to participate in the celebration Grand event.
National Science Council
Chen Yishen, vice chairman of the National Science Council, said in her speech that the main task of the National Science Council is to support advanced research, but it also attaches great importance to popular science research.
Lin Yihua, vice mayor of Taipei City, emphasized that this year UNESCO is talking about the importance of “basic science” in promoting sustainable development.
She said that sustainability must not be a slogan, but must be implemented in everyone’s life, especially in sustainable development, many of which are scientific concepts, including the promotion of 108 syllabus, self-learning and other concepts, which are all interlocking.
Promoting science education
Chen Qinghe, the president of Shih Hsin University who has been committed to the promotion of science communication for many years, and the chairman of the Chinese Science Communication Association, also participated in the 2023 “Taipei Science Day” today.
He said that schools at all levels promote popular science education in an innovative, diverse and life-oriented way. “It is very touching for children and adults to gather together to do science. However, the media also plays an important role. Shih Hsin University will continue to invest in science communication Promote and fulfill the social responsibility of the university”.
The origin of Science Day can be traced back to the national science week break-through activity piloted in 10 counties and cities across the country in 2015. The “Taiwan Science Popularization Round Island Train” in May 2016 is a milestone in the National Science Day activities.
Fun of exploring science
The representative of the Taiwan Executive Team of the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD) and the former convener of the “Science Popularization Program” of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Professor Qiu Meihong from Taiwan Normal University explained that the promotion of popular science for all is to let children enjoy the fun of exploring science.
“It is fun to do science by hands, and I hope these science popularization activities can continue forever”.
