The Art of Understanding the Universe: Basic Sciences
A congress called “The Art of Understanding the Universe: Basic Sciences” will be organized in Selcuk University (Konya/Turkey) in cooperation with the Turkish National Commission for UNESCO and Turkish Academy of Sciences.
It will be an opportunity for the university students and teachers of the basic sciences in high schools to attend. The event will be in two sections seminars of invited lecturers in which target group members will be the audience and implementation activities in which target group members will be active with their presentations. The registration of target group members (120 undergraduate students and 20 postgraduate students of basic sciences, 40 successful students studying in high schools, and teachers of basic sciences in high schools-2 teachers from each of the Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics branches) will be accepted on event’s website.
The general objectives of the event are:
• to draw attention to the importance of basic sciences in International Development;
• to raise awareness about UNESCO;
• to draw attention to the UN 2030 Sustainability Development Goals;
• to address the relationship between basic sciences and applied sciences;
• to develop and reinforce the target group members’ self-confidence in scientific studies and scientific thinking;
• to contribute to the development of the entrepreneurship and individual creativity based on the achievements of target group members;
• to forge and foster science diplomacy in the context of the basic sciences.
The event will include oral presentations and implementation activities on the basis of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals based on the 5Ps for sustainable development: Planet, People, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnership.
The event will enable the target group members to gain an entrepreneurial, interdisciplinary, and solution-oriented perspective on current and future problems by raising awareness about the indispensability of basic sciences in regard to understanding the universe and life and finding solutions to problems. On the other hand, the relevant seminars will also emphasize the topics of priority for UNESCO, such as society, science for peace and prosperity, open science, science for all, cultural heritage, geological heritage, scientific partnerships, climate change, sustainable green planet, gender equality in science, and barrier-free life. The abstracts of the seminars of invited speakers and posters of target group members will be published in the congress abstract book, which will be shared online from the congress web site.
Various implementation activities will be organized in order to keep the target group members dynamic during the event and to ensure that the targeted awareness will be created not only through seminars but also through practices in which target group members can be actively participate. It includes three activity groups in total:
i) posters (about basic sciences, interdisciplinary practices of basic sciences, their relationship with art and their awareness on society);
The target group members will be able to participate to the congress with posters on basic sciences, basic science applications, the relationship between basic science and arts, and public awareness of basic sciences. Possible contents of the posters will be announced on the congress web site. The subjects for the posters will not be limited to what is given on the website, also there will be a “From You” section in which the participants subject suggestions. The abstracts for posters registered by the target group members will be evaluated by the Congress Scientific Committee and the abstracts of the accepted posters will be published in the abstract book. The best posters, which will be determined by the evaluation made by the Scientific Committee, will be rewarded.
ii) awareness and competition-based stands;
Within the scope of the event, stands will be opened by the target group members under three different headlines “Science”, “Awareness” and “Competition”. Possible contents of the stands will be announced on the congress website. The subjects for the stands will not be limited to what is given on the website, also there will be a “From You” section in which the participants subject suggestions.
Before the congress, the layout plans and stand content information of the stands whose applications are accepted will be announced on the congress website. Stands will be active during the event. The abstracts for stands registered by the target group members will be evaluated by the Congress Scientific Committee and the abstracts of the accepted posters will be published in the abstract book. The best posters, which will be determined by the evaluation made by the Scientific Committee, will be rewarded.
iii) basic science-art activities.
The target group members can also attend to the congress with artistic activities such as Short film, Theatre, Music, Painting, Cartoon, Poetry, and subjects related to basic sciences. The applications of the target group members regarding the activities to be announced on the web site before the event, will be accepted after the Scientific Committee evaluation. These artistic activities, which will also be provided with moderator support by the Scientific Committee, will be actively carried out by the target group members during the congress. The best basic science and art activities, which will be determined by the evaluation made by the Scientific Committee, will be rewarded.
In addition, banners will be requested in order to increase the motivation of the target group members by keeping them active before the congress. the target group members will be asked to create banners in the nature of public service covering the basic sciences of 5Ps subjects, for this reason, an announcement will be made on the website and social media platforms of the congress before the event. These banners sent by the target group members will also be shared on the congress social media accounts and will be displayed in the congress area during the congress.
