Listening to the Urgent Call of Humanity: IYBSSD and Onward
Prof. Prajval Shastri (Vice Chair of the IYBSSD Steering and Advisory Committee and Adjunct Professor at the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research) is visiting TRIUMF, Canada’s particle accelerator centre in Vancouver.
The program includes several highlights:
– Monday, September 11th: Science for Sustainability – an open dialogue in a key moment of global mobilization towards sustainability is a public event at the Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue, downtown Vancouver
– Wednesday September 13th, Listening to the Urgent Call of Humanity: The International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development and Onward”, special colloquium to the TRIUMF communityc
The IYBSSD has been an extraordinary opportunity for the global scientific community to come together and reflect on its impact on the path taken by humanity so far, to collectively debate on the role of the sciences in our daily lives and ask if our science praxis is in tune with the idea of a good society which is what sustainable development is. Key to this process are insights from the social sciences for equity, diversity, inclusion and decolonisation within the sciences in order for it to be a tenable enterprise. Going forward the United Nations has by consensus, declared the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development, 2024-2033 to include all sciences and all knowledge. This is a global acknowledgement that the time has come to consolidate a renewed set of principles to shape our practice in a call to action and chart a new vision of our future. Some of the possibilities that this opportunity opens up will be discussed.
– Wednesday September 13th, Degendering Physics Practice: Past Lessons and the Way Forward, an event with TRIUMF Grads and Postdocs Society (GAPS)
– Saturday September 16th, The Heftiest Things We Know: The Sherlock Holmes Argument and Beyond, Saturday Morning Lecture.
