Humboldt Highway II – computer cluster on renewable energies
For many years, scientists from DESY, in Hamburg, have been cooperating with scientists from the InSTEC institute at Havana University in the field of elementary particle physics. Students come nearly every year to attend the DESY summerstudent program in Hamburg, and many students from Havana have started and very successfully completed their PhD at DESY/Hamburg University.
While we progress scientifically very fast when scientists come in person to DESY Hamburg, the progress is slowed down when they are back in Cuba, since the internet connection and computing facilities are limited.
With the support from HamburgAmbassador a small workshop will be organized at DESY,Hamburg, on “Humboldt Highway II – a computer cluster on renewable energies”.
The idea is to discuss possibilities to build a (small) computer cluster which runs fully on renewable energies to support the scientific exchange program between scientists in Cuba and in Hamburg.
With building a computer cluster on renewable energies we would allow scientists from Cuba to participate actively in the scientific development and discussion. It would allow scientist on site in Cuba to perform calculations and simulations, and thus being able to contribute to scientific development.
We plan to start using this computer cluster first for computing in the field of particle physics. Once it is proven to work, it can easily be extended to other fields.
Having a computer cluster fully on renewable energies clearly marks a milestone for sustainable development.
