This honey inspired event will consist of two specialist talks: the first on the importance of bees by Prof Pirk of the Social Insects Research Group of the Department of Zoology and Entomology and the second will focus on the analysis of honey for pesticide contamination by Dr Abafe from the University of Birmingham. The important role of analytical chemistry in understanding and managing these issues will be highlighted. A comparative honey tasting is included and a honey-inspired dinner will follow, which will be prepared and served by students from the University of Pretoria Department of Food and Consumer Science.

The event aims to raise awareness of the importance of bees and discuss the issue of pesticide contamination in honey as a result of anthropogenic activities. The important role of analytical chemistry in understanding and managing these issues will be highlighted. As an important natural food source, this honey inspired event is linked to SDG2 (zero hunger) and to SDG 11 and 15 regarding better understanding the impact of anthropogenic activities in cities on bee populations.
