10th anniversary of the Higgs Boson discovery on July 4th, 2022
The celebration of this historical event coincides this year with the International Year of the Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD 2022). The South African Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) in partnership with SAIP will host a plenary session on the Higgs Boson anniversary at SAIP2022 conference.
This talk will describe the long journey to the discovery of the Higgs Boson, briefly recalling the physics aims, outlining some of the technological and engineering challenges faced during construction, and the making of the discovery itself. The talk also will discuss the prospects for the high-luminosity operation of the LHC, especially those related to the examination of the properties of the Higgs Boson with larger data samples.
Expected Outcomes:
• Understand the applications of discoveries from the basic science research done in Higgs Boson for example big data and machine learning and results models being using in COVID-19 modelling.
• Scientists able to think outside the box on how their basic research findings are applicable to solving socio-economic problems.
• Scientists, public and policy makers see the link between basic and fundamental research and socio-economic development.
