Shakeel Atchia, from Mauritius Institute of Education, will elucidate the pivotal role of basic sciences in driving STEM education towards sustainability.

STEM education for Sustainability encourages students to draw on their ‘Scientific, Technological, Engineering and Mathematical’ knowledge and competences to contribute to the development of citizens who understand global problems and support actions in society that address these challenges in a meaningful and knowledge-based way.

Though STEM education focuses on the integration of the different disciplines together as a whole, it is important to acknowledge that basic sciences remain the driver of STEM education for sustainability. The basic sciences (biology, chemistry, and physics) form the bedrock for effective and informed decisions in the pursuit of sustainable practices, as the foundational scientific knowledge and skills prepare citizens with the necessary competences to understand, explore and address sustainability challenges.
