TRIUMF is Canada’s particle accelerator centre and a national laboratory. With its 14 member universities, and many collaboration agreements around the world, it forms a national and international network. From the hunt for the smallest particles in the universe to the development of new technologies, including next-generation batteries and medical isotopes, TRIUMF is pushing the frontiers in research to advance science, medicine, and industry.

Science Week 2022 will feature three main program streams:

• Celebrate recent achievements and articulate the science drivers for our current program.
• Collaborate on major science directions and new initiatives for the next 5-Year Plan – guided by TRIUMF’s 20-Year Vision.
• Connect through ample networking opportunities for community, students, and postdocs – engagements.

We’re placing special emphasis on programming for students, including social and professional networking opportunities. Furthermore, we will be focusing on defining major science directions.

An important aspect in this process is our intention to find new ways to drive dialogue and advances in two key areas:

1. sustainability, green technology and
2. diversity and inclusion (EDI) across our network and communities.

We acknowledge the urgent need—and opportunity—to use our research capabilities, expertise and infrastructure to help develop solutions to global climate and sustainability challenges. Examples of how to address sustainability questions with TRIUMF’s expertise that will be part of the discussion during Science Week are:

1. Particle accelerators and associated technologies that have broad applications in the context of sustainability and climate challenges as those could be used for accelerator-driven nuclear reactors production and nuclear waste transmutation;
2. characterization and qualification of green materials;
3. developing green chemistry processes using muons;
4. studying diffusion process in potential future battery materials;
5. use of particle physics detectors for environmental air and water quality monitoring.

Science Week will also feature a life-bridge session to the International Conference on Atomic Physics that is taking place in Toronto at the same time to connect to new communities and discuss new directions and synergies.
