Mobile Laboratory
Mobile Lab is a self-contained, travelling laboratory that accommodate student participation in laboratory STEM experiments for those who have no lab access. The program is given for schools found in a radius of 50-70 km from Bahir Dar City. The main goal of this program is:
1. to insight students the first-hand experience in observation and manipulation of the materials of science is superior to other methods of developing, understanding and appreciation;
2. to engage students in well-designed laboratory experiences and to develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills;
3. to inspire students for further education and prepare them for high-tech careers;
4. to make students innovative, creative in STEM subjects.
Generally, the mobile lab allows students from primary and high school students to learn STEM subjects via practice. This program is tailored to schools that do not have the necessary laboratory facilities.
As the low income country most of schools in villages and rural areas does not have laboratories; and even those that have laboratories do not have the necessary lab equipment and materials like chemicals, regents, etc. thus running such kind of programs have a paramount effect on the quality of STEM education in the country.
The mobile laboratories will have a tremendous effect on STEM education. It also provides opportunities to vulnerable groups to experience science in practice. Besides, the quality of STEM education will be improved in ten folds. Most of rural schools cover/teach STEM subjects in theory and even some of the schools do not have electricity; thus teaching students using laboratories will not only improve the quality but also inspire students to join STEM areas in their further education. This kind of trend will disseminate STEM education to many areas and will improve the livelihood of the society as most of the experiments are done in real life experiences.
