What causes an individual to make a decision to leave one’s home and get into journey to another country?

There will be a discussion about what kind of global human migration movements modern wars are causing and where to. Are there differences between the migration caused by war or climate change and environmental disaster? Some crises are slow and some are proceeding faster. Thus, the migration movements caused by these crises are different.

In this panel discussion, the panelists are discussing about complex reasons behind the migration movements, as well as the power, dominance and border politics behind them. Who are allowed to move freely between the borders and whose movements are restricted? Is Finland prepared to possibly growing global human migration movements? What is happening in the local perspective when refugees and asylum seekers arrive to Finland?

• Tomi Martikainen, Head of a reception center;
• Marja Tiilikainen, researcher at the Migration Institute of Finland;
• Sanna Sutter, Head of migration unit at the Ministry of Interior;
• Sari Pöyhönen, professor of language studies;
• Emmanuel Sibomana, the Executive Director of World Great Comission Ministries.

Päivi Pirkkalainen, a university researcher will lead the conversation.
