Large scientific facilities like the European XFEL benefit from a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to software development. While software projects often start with a specific scientific problem or experimental setup in mind, the large data volumes produced at the European XFEL and the complex nature of the facility’s experimental end stations necessitate adherence to modern software engineering practices to produce sustainable state-of-the art software.

In this talk, Steffen Hauf from European XFEL discusses how diverse and agile teams, which combine scientific and engineering backgrounds, and emphasise collaborative development, facilitate high-quality software. Using selected software projects at the European XFEL as examples, the talk will highlight factors that contribute to the success of interdisciplinary software teams.
